History of Banneker Homes

Banneker Homes is located in the heart of the Western Addition of San Francisco, California. Banneker Homes is a multifamily complex consisting of 108 apartments. Banneker Homes was built in 1967 as affordable housing. The eleven ($11,000,000) million dollar renovation of Banneker Homes was completed in 2007.

The renovation consisted of, but was not limited to, the following improvements:

Playground Area:
When the property was first constructed it did not include any children play facilities. With the grant funds, Banneker installed approximately 1,400 square feet of playground equipment. This equipment included swings, slides, play-bars, etc.

Privacy Gates and Fencing:
The privacy gates and fencing that are currently installed are designed with to give the property an “Eastern” look while providing security for the property's residents. The front entrances to all of the building structures are designed to appear as open canopies versus institutionalized structures. The pedestrian gates are keyless and controlled by a 3,000 lb. magnetic locking systems. These systems make it difficult for easy vandalism.

Exterior Structure Improvements:
Banneker consists of seven large buildings which were fortunate enough to have all of their roofing materials replaced during the subsidy grant. The materials also included the installation of drain and gutter systems.
All seven buildings exteriors were completely painted in using a three color pattern.

Energy saving high fluorescent lighting was installed on all exterior buildings which enabled high visibility during evening hours.

Interior Improvements:
Approximately 60% of the 108 units were completely rehabilitated with new carpeting, new vinyl flooring, cabinetry, countertops, stoves, refrigerators, vanities, plumbing systems and closet doors.

Security:
At Banneker, we take our members safety to heart. We have security cameras located throughout the complex.

Computer Learning Center: Our members enjoy an on-site Computer Learning Center.

The members of Banneker Homes enjoy the many upgrades to the property. With the assistance of the property’s Site Administrator, Ms. Shantoya Cruze, and her staff, the property is well looked after.
