The History of Banneker Homes

Banneker Homes is located in the heart of the Western Addition and was built in Equal Housing Opportunity1969 as affordable housing.

  • Banneker is a multifamily complex consisting of 108 apartments
  • Banneker is overseen by a seven member Board of Directors and is currently managed by Alton Management Corporation
  • Over the last 5 years Banneker has made substantial site improvements
  • Continued beautification improvements of interior and exterior planned for 2002
  • In 1997 the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded a Flexible Subsidy Grant in the amount of $1.3 million for capitol improvements to the property
  • The grant enable the property to provide much needed repairs and upgrades.

    Some of the upgrades included the following:

    • Playground Area
      • When the property was first constructed, it did not include any children play facilities. With the grant Banneker installed approximately 1400 square feet of playground equipment. This equipment included swings, slides, play-bars, etc.
    • Privacy Gates and Fencing
      • The privacy gates and fencing that are currently installed are designed with to give the property and Eastern look while providing security for the property's residents. The front entrances to all of the building structures are designed to appear as open canopies versus institutionalized structures. The pedestrian gates are keyless and controlled by a 3,000 lb. magnetic locking systems. These systems make it difficult for easy vandalism
    • Exterior Structure Improvements
      • Banneker consist of 7 large buildings which were fortunate enough to have all of it's roofing materials replaced during the subsidy grant. The materials also included the installation of drain and gutter systems.
      • All 7 buildings exterior was completely painted in a 3 color pattern
      • Energy saving high fluorescent lighting was installed on all exterior buildings, which enabled high visibility during evening hours.
    • Interior Improvements
      • Approximately 60% of 108 units were completely rehabbed with new carpeting, vinyl, cabinets, countertops, stoves, refrigerators, vanity, plumbing systems and closet doors.

In 1998, Banneker applied for and received a HUD Drug Elimination Grant in the amount of $125,000. This grant enabled the property to open a Neighborhood Network Program which included an In-house Computer Learning Center. The NNP/CLC provided programs for the property's residents, as well as the outlining community. The program was unique, not only did the CLC provide basic computer training but it also provided the residents the opportunity to learn the repair of donated computer equipment.
